Supporting social connectivity and empowerment for young adults in Canmore.

Young adults living and working in the Bow Valley often face challenges unique to their age group. Along with finding secure housing and dealing with a high cost of living, building lasting relationships with what is often a transient, seasonal peer group can be difficult. Making strong connections can be hard, so many young people don’t set down roots and simply leave.

The Canmore Young Adult Network (CYAN) is addressing these challenges. CYAN is designed to build meaningful social connections between young adults aged 18-35 by providing opportunities for networking, social engagement, and affordable, active recreation. These connections help to combat social isolation, enhance well-being, and cultivate a strong support network. The Wim and Pauw Foundation donated $5,000 for CYAN to increase their programming.

“Our goal is to strengthen both the individual lives of young adults and the fabric of the Canmore community as a whole,” said Nicole Eplett, CYAN’s Director of Operations. “This donation from the Foundation means we can expand our programs, mitigate financial barriers, and give people opportunities they might otherwise not have. Young people are essential to our community and are the foundation of a large segment of the workforce.”

Through regular events and activities, such as workshops, social gatherings, and recreational outings, CYAN creates opportunities for people to meet, share experiences, and develop lasting friendships. Focused on affordability and access for participants, regular events include monthly board game nights, by-donation pasta nights, and numerous one-off events throughout the year. In 2022, CYAN hosted over 70 events, attracting about 50 people to each one. Because of demand, they plan to add at least 30 more in 2023.

The Foundation’s gift allows CYAN to offer free weekly yoga sessions and regular, affordable mountain bike lessons and maintenance classes. Not only do these activities promote physical and mental well-being, but they also foster social connections, build confidence, and create a sense of belonging among participants. Facing some of the highest costs of living in Alberta, affordable opportunities are essential for many young people in the Bow Valley.

“By facilitating connections and providing access to local resources, CYAN ensures that people have the tools and support they need to thrive. Our donation helps reduce financial barriers to active living opportunities that are fun, build relationships, and ultimately strengthen community,” said Cathy Geisler, Executive Director of the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation.

Due to the popularity of their events, CYAN aims to expand its reach, diversify its programs, and deepen its impact by engaging more young adults, forging new partnerships, and championing initiatives that contribute to the overall well-being and growth of Canmore’s young adult community.
